Ég hvet alla til að lesa þessa grein í Independent, alla. Hún fjallar um múrinn sem Ísraelar eru að reisa og þær hörmulegu afleiðingar sem hann mun hafa í för með sér fyrir Palestinímenn, sem hafa það nógu andskoti skítt fyrir.

Tómas Friedman skrifar pistil í NYT í dag um Ísrael, Passions and Interests
It is time for Israel to use its overwhelming strength to take some initiative. The only people who can stop the suicide bombers are the Palestinians. They won't do it overnight and can't do it with a decimated Palestinian Authority. It can happen, though, if Israel works with a new Palestinian prime minister, makes tough demands but doesn't expect perfection overnight, doesn't let itself be goaded by Hamas into freezing everything, takes its own initiative to dismantle settlements and taps what is still there: Palestinian interest in going to [University of] Memphis, not just to heaven.

I know a vast majority of Israelis want a decent, normal society, but their ideologically driven leaders are lost in space, squandering their people's great strength rather than channeling it into creative options. And the Bush team, which should be acting as a reality check, has fallen so deep into the pocket of Ariel Sharon you can't even find it anymore.

Þessi múr er svo ótrúlega mögnuð hugmynd að maður á bágt með að átta sig á því að hann skuli í raun vera til.

Ég forðast alltaf allar samlíkingar við Nasista, enda eru þær alls ekki viðeigandi. En samt, þetta er ótrúlega kaldhæðið allt saman.

Einsog segir í grein, sem ég benti á:

The Jewish people did not survive for two millennia in order to pioneer new weaponry, computer security programs or anti-missile missiles. We were supposed to be a light unto the nations. In this we have failed.

Þetta er fyrst og fremst sorglegt fyrir Gyðinga.

Hverjum er ekki sama hvað gerist þarna? Þetta er svo langt í burtu, lögum allt heima hjá okkur áður en við förum að dreifa kröftum okkar út um allt!
