'The world is flat'

The Economist gefur ekki nýjustu bók Thomasar Friedman góðan dóm í nýlegum bókardómi.
Mr Friedman's problem is not a lack of detail. It is that he has so little to say. Over and over again he makes the same few familiar points: the world is getting smaller, this process seems inexorable, many things are changing, and we should not fear this. Rarely has so much information been collected to so little effect.

A number of truly enlightening books have been published recently which not only support globalisation, but answer its critics and explain its complexities to the general reader—most notably Jagdish Bhagwati's “In Defence of Globalisation” and Martin Wolf's “Why Globalisation Works”. Because of Mr Friedman's fame as a columnist, his book will probably far outsell both of these. That is a shame. Anyone tempted to buy “The World is Flat” should hold back, and purchase instead Mr Bhagwati's book or Mr Wolf's.

Ég keypti Bhagwati dýrum dómi í hardcoveri síðasta vor. Las u.þ.b. helminginn og svo varð hún undir á náttborðinu einhverra hluta vegna. Mjög áhugaverð bók og rosalega "sober". Þannig það var ekki það að það væri eitthvað að henni.

Mig langar að lesa Wolf en ég held að Bhagwati sé mun "gáfulegri" þá hann skrifi mjög léttan og auðskilinn texta (sbr. fyrirlestrana hans sem hann flutti fyrir hagfræðistúdenta í Stokkhólmi og voru svo gefnir út í Protectionism og Free Trade Today).

Annars myndi ég segja að mig langi mest af öllu til að lesa þessa bók, þó ég óttist pínulítið að hún sé of mikið fyrir "pöpulinn".

Merkilegt! The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time er bókin sem Economist fjallar um en bókin sem ég vísaði í í sakleysi mínu er kölluð The End of Poverty: How We Can Make It Happen in Our sem vissulega hljómar betur fyrir pöpulinn, ekki síst þegar stendur "Foreword by Bono" í flenniletri á forsíðunni.

Sorry, en það þarf mikið til að ég kaupi bók með "formála eftir Bono". Það er þó mun minna gert úr því á "Economic Possibilitites" útgáfunnar.

Sú er líka 416 bls. á meðan hin er ekki nema 288!

Hahaha! Economist hittir naglann á höfuðið:

And, frankly, it is difficult to forgive his invitation to Bono to write the introduction to the book. Describing his experience of campaigning with Mr Sachs, the Irish rock singer recalls, “I would enter the world of acronyms with a man who can make alphabet soup out of them. Soup you'd want to eat. Soup that would, if ingested properly, enable a lot more soup to be eaten by a lot more people.” Sorry, even if it sells more copies of this otherwise outstanding book, publishing such drivel cannot be right.
