Herlausar þjóðir

Athyglisverður listi frá Daily Telegraph yfir herlausar þjóðir.
Haiti (Pop: 8,528,000) - Disbanded in June 1995, but rebels have demanded its re-establishment.

Costa Rica (4,401,000) - The constitution has forbidden a standing military in times of peace since 1949.

Panama (3,232,000) - Abolished its army in 1990, confirmed by a parliamentary unanimous vote for constitutional change.

Mauritius (1,245,000) - A multicultural country without an army since 1968.

Solomon Islands (478,000) - Has known a heavy ethnic conflict between 1998 and 2006, in which Australia and other Pacific countries finally intervened to restore peace and order.

Iceland (297,139) - No standing army, but is a member of Nato.

Maldives (297,000) - Has had no army since its independence on 1965.

Micronesia (110,000) - Defence is the responsibility of the United States.

Monaco (35,656) - Renounced its military investment in the 17th century because the expansion of ranges of artillery had rendered it defenceless.

Vatican City (783) - The largely ceremonial Swiss Guard acts as a security police force.
